about what’s on paper,” Chappell con-
tinues.
Williams is the only company in
the world transforming offgas using
their methods. “We are experts in gas
processing and we can take this exper-
tise into other markets.”
We can build other plants using
the same principles we’re using now,”
he adds. The company is currently
working on new plant projects that
will become live once scope issues are
sorted out. “We have had lots of inter-
action with global producers because
they are always looking for the next
place to build a plant.”
WORKING IN ALBERTA
Alberta has been a great place for
Williams to expand business, as the oil
sands represent close to two-thirds of
the world’s total petroleum resource
(
at least 1.7 trillion barrels). The com-
pany has been working in Alberta
since 2002.
Williams can be competitive
globally by continuing to build on our
technology in Alberta—Alberta is the
place to do this because this is where
leading enterprises are headquar-
tered—this is a very entrepreneurial
province. Turning these products into
something usable is a huge opportu-
nity for Alberta, and Canada.”
Williams is currently finalizing
plans to build and operate Canada’s
first propane dehydrogenation (PDH)
facility, which produces polymer-grade
propylene, a valuable petrochemical
feedstock used in plastics manufactur-
ing. With the creation of this plant, the
company has the opportunity to link
production in the West with manufac-
turing in Eastern Canada. In a recent
release, Chappell noted:
We’re thrilled to be moving full-
speed ahead on Canada’s first PDH
facility. The project fits strategically
within Williams’ operations in Alberta,
leverages our expertise in propylene
and adds further value to a byprod-
uct of oil sands upgraders.” The new
PDH facility will expand market op-
portunities for Canada as a whole, and
feed the demands of North America’s
growing energy industry. “What is
produced in the West can be a benefit
for the whole country. This is an op-
portunity for jobs and tax dollars to
link eastern and western Canada. We
will all benefit,” Chappell says.
Williams’ activities in Alberta
have proven that Canada is on the
forefront of energy production tech-
nology, and that the country is best-in-
class when it comes to sustainable op-
erations. Williams has been operating
for 90 years in Canada, and the com-
pany’s total investment into Alberta is
expected to total $1.7 billion (inclusive
of projects that are completed and op-
erational and those that are sanctioned
and in progress). With over 150 people
working in Canada, Williams will con-
tinue to expand its reach within Cana-
da and beyond.
As an important player in Al-
berta’s oil and gas industry, Williams
is setting the stage for the next level of
energy production.
