Canadian Manufacturing

This section is a statement of scope with nothing underneath it. No document in the source cache behind this desk reports what Canadian factories made, sold or shipped, so no page here reports it either, and the honest thing to publish in that position is the boundary of the subject and the list of records that would open it. What follows is that boundary, drawn against the one section on the site that is fully built.

Where the mineral record runs out

The annual federal series that every mining page here rests on counts minerals as they leave the operation that produced them. It has a menu of measures and none of them follows the material any further. Once a concentrate is loaded, whatever happens to it next is outside the table, and the table does not resume when the same atoms come back as wire, rail, sheet or fertiliser.

One page in the mining section already runs into this wall in public. The iron ore page carries an amount that covers a single processing stage, because the survey collects the stages separately and holds most of them back, and the page says in its opening paragraphs that a reader who takes the published amount as the size of Canadian iron has taken one stage for the whole chain. That is a manufacturing problem showing up inside a mining record, and it is the clearest existing marker of where this section starts.

A boundary the federal instrument draws itself

The line is not an editorial invention. The federal regulations that list which projects are caught by an impact assessment enumerate a mine and a mill as separate items, and the two are measured on opposite sides of the same machine: a mine is caught on what it produces, and a mill on what it takes in. A drafter who thought the two were one activity would have written one item.

That distinction is the seam this section sits on. The permitting page works the regulation item by item and states the capacity at which each one bites. Nothing on that page, and nothing here, says what those mills then produced, because the instrument that catches a project says nothing about its output and was never meant to.

What this section does not have

There is no output figure, no shipment value, no subsector split, no plant, no employer and no employment count anywhere in this section, and nothing in it is currently capable of supporting one. It would take minutes to write a paragraph naming the largest manufacturing subsectors in the country from general knowledge, and the paragraph would be unverifiable, undated and attached to no publisher, which is precisely the kind of writing the rest of this site exists as an alternative to.

When figures do arrive they will arrive under the rule the mineral pages already follow, and the method note this publication carries on its front page states it in full. A quantity is shown with the name of the body that published it, the period it covers and the concept it measures, and two quantities that measure different concepts are never averaged, reconciled or presented as a check on each other.

What would have to be retrieved first

Three records, in this order. A national survey table of manufacturing activity, saved as a document rather than read off a chart, so that a page can name the table and the reference period beside every number taken from it. A classification of subsectors from the same publisher, so that the words a page uses to divide the industry are the words the statistics are actually collected under rather than a categorisation invented here. And a provincial or territorial series, because the mining section shows what a national total conceals, and there is no reason to expect a manufacturing series to escape the disclosure protections that empty so many mineral cells.

Until those exist in the cache this page will keep saying so. A section that admits it is empty costs a reader one paragraph. A section that fills itself with plausible sentences costs a reader the ability to trust the sections that are not empty, and it is the second cost that this desk is organised to avoid.
