Everything else on this site answers what is on the record. The pieces below answer what follows from it, which is a different job and a riskier one, because a document cannot be pointed at to settle an argument about what it implies. That is the only part of the desk where a position is taken and defended rather than sourced and left alone.

The rule that does not change

An argument here still runs on retrieved documents. A piece may reason past what its sources say and it may not invent what they say, so every quantity in this section comes out of the same ledger the reference pages draw on, carrying the publisher, the period and the concept it was measured under. Where a piece wants a figure nobody has retrieved, it names the figure it wants and does without it.

One desk of the five, mining, carries a reference layer. A piece landing anywhere else, in transport or in any of the three beside it, has nothing under it to lean on. Those pieces are shorter and more careful about the difference between a thing that is not so and a thing nobody here has checked. They are worth reading for what they decline to claim as much as for what they argue, which is an unusual thing to say about a publication and is the arrangement Canadian Industry Online would rather make than the alternative.

One consequence shows up in the shape of the pieces themselves. A reference page can be laid out before it is written, because the questions it answers are fixed by the record it sits on. An argument cannot, so the sections below run to whatever length the step they carry needs, some of them to two sentences. Anybody looking for a consistent house template across these files will not find one, and its absence is the point rather than an oversight.

Nothing here carries a byline

No piece in this section is attributed to a named writer, and the structured data on each one gives the publication as the author. A name with a biography attached would be checkable by anybody who typed it into a search box, and inventing one to make a page look staffed sits in the same class as inventing a licence number. Work that arrives here later from somebody outside the desk will carry that person's own name, because it will be theirs to stand behind.
